Job Title: Structures Engineer
 
Location: Chelmsford
 
Contract Type: Permanent
 
We are seeking a dynamic and skilled Engineer to join our structures team in Chelmsford. We are looking for a motivated individual with a strong analytical background to undertake the design of highway structure replacement, strengthening, refurbishment projects, and assessments. Collaborating with the Team Leader and overseeing junior staff, you will leverage your expertise in highway structures and proven track record in project delivery.
 
As the Engineer, you will report directly to the Team Leader and assume responsibility for planning, coordinating, and managing assigned schemes. This role will require effective collaboration with internal stakeholders and third-party partners, emphasizing the importance of relationship building.
 
Key Responsibilities:
 
Prepare design plans, programs, and specifications for highway structures works and services.
Provide exceptional project leadership and guidance.
Assist in the management and monitoring of works programs or services.
Mentor junior staff and conduct thorough checks of their work.
Support the Team Leader in all areas covered within the group and act as a deputy in their absence.
Assist in budgetary control, ensuring financial management is upheld within your areas of responsibility.
Generate monthly progress reports and program updates.
Provide timely and accurate advice to County Councillors, District Members, Parish Councils, and the general public on all matters related to structures.
Support a positive and constructive approach to Health and Safety, Environmental Management System, Quality Management System, and Construction Design Management, with the goal of minimizing work-related injuries by implementing policies and procedures.
Understand the overall functions, objectives, and direction of the organization, and how the structures service aligns with those goals.
Requirements:
 
Expertise in design using Eurocodes, modern standards, and DMRB.
Working knowledge of preparing contract specifications and familiarity with the use of MCHW.
Extensive knowledge and practical application of Highway Legislation, relevant structures design procedures, standards, and best practices.
Familiarity with budgetary governance, management, and control measures.
Knowledge and application of Health and Safety legislation, including Construction (Design & Management) Regulations.
A degree in Civil Engineering or an equivalent high-level qualification, or substantial experience in Structures.
Membership of or working towards membership of a relevant Professional Institution (ICE, IStructE).
A minimum of 5 years of experience in delivering highway structures schemes.
Recent experience in leading and mentoring junior engineers in the execution of highway structures projects.
