​​HS2 is a high speed rail line connecting towns and cities in the south with the midlands and the north. It has been described as the backbone of the UK rail system. Tens of thousands of jobs have been created from all stages of this major project. The construction of the new railway is split into three phases:

• Phase 1 - linking London and the West Midlands;

• Phase 2a - linking the West Midlands and the North via Crewe; and

• Phase 2b - completing the railway to Manchester, the East Midlands and the North.
