Job description
We are seeking an experienced Principal Safety Engineer to lead and coordinate a nuclear safety team, ensuring the timely delivery of high-quality safety deliverables and services. The role involves overseeing the production of safety documentation, leading and participating in HAZOPs and other safety analyses, contributing to safety case planning, and reviewing technical documentation for accuracy and completeness.

- Location: Remote, 1 day per month at client site in Plymouth
- Contract Duration: 12 months (with potential extension)
- Start Date: ASAP
- Rate: £86 per hour Inside IR35
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate and oversee the nuclear safety team to meet agreed plans, scopes of work, and quality standards while providing input into safety case planning and development.
- Deliver HAZOPs and other safety analyses to required timeframes and quality benchmarks, ensuring alignment with project requirements, regulatory standards, and company procedures.
- Review and validate safety documentation for correctness and completeness.
- Collaborate with engineering, design, construction, and operational teams to support nuclear facility projects.
- Apply sound technical judgement while working independently and in a team environment.
Required Experience
- 10+ years' experience in the management and preparation of safety documentation for nuclear installations (or similarly regulated industries).
- Strong background in engineering design and safety practices.
- Proven experience in formal safety analyses, including HAZOPs, HAZID, FMECA, FTA, etc.
- Experience supporting construction, operation, refit, or repair of nuclear facilities or comparable specialist environments.
- Strong leadership and team coordination skills with the ability to manage and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
Qualifications
- Relevant Engineering or Science degree (minimum BEng/BSc) or equivalent qualification/experience.
- Chartered status or professional registration with a recognised engineering/science institute (preferred).
