Job Description
This role offers the opportunity to deliver and assure safe outcomes from our highways design projects across Scotland for our key national and local government clients. Experienced in the design requirements for highways delivery and the processes for identifying and assessing risk, you'll support our wider teams by guiding on road user safety. This will be from drawing up Departures from Standards and assuring design rationale, to reviewing design safety and taking responsibility for applied safety governance.
As part of our Highways and Active Travel engineering team, you'll work closely with other disciplines, giving you a wide network and broad influence. You'll be based at either our Edinburgh or Glasgow office but with some travel to other Atkins or client locations possible to ensure you can deliver value for our clients.
Key responsibilities:
·Providing safety leadership to our highways and active travel design teams in all aspects of road user safety.
·Shaping strategy and governance of our designs, developing or reviewing technical notes and support products such as the Design Strategy Record, specific safety risk assessments and maintenance strategies. Your work will demonstrate that the highway can be built, operated and maintained safely.
·Delivering projects, using your excellent analytical skills to solve engineering problems and assure and influence stakeholders.
·Maintaining and developing excellent professional relationships with clients, preparing fee offers and presenting to internal and external stakeholders.
·Prepare detailed fee proposals and contribute to major bids to secure opportunities with new and existing clients.
·Support and deputise for senior management of the wider Road Safety team.
·Providing technical direction and advice for junior members of the Road Safety team.
·Project Managing / Technical Advisor on the preparation of technical content for feasibility, preliminary and detailed design deliverables for transportation infrastructure schemes.
·Ability to collaborate with colleagues with different specialisms in different teams to maximise Operational Safety outcomes for our clients.
Key requirements
·Experienced Road Safety Audit Team Leader in accordance with GG119.
·BEng, MEng or MSc Degree or equivalent.
·Membership of relevant technical institutions - e.g., ICE, CIHT; chartered or with a pathway to chartership.
·Experience of working with our key clients, e.g., National Highways, Transport Scotland, Local Authorities, developers and/or major contractors.
·Ability to manage multiple stakeholder and client relationships.
·Able to demonstrate that you are a resourceful problem solver and excellent communicator with commercial awareness.
·An ability to demonstrate expertise in some or all of the following areas: walking / wheeling, cycling, traffic management, traffic signals, bus priority / BRT, traffic signing and wayfinding, traffic regulation orders and parking and detailed infrastructure design
Desirable requirements
·Able to demonstrate leadership and influence on highways projects.
·Background or experience in road safety engineering, including collision analysis and research.
·Experienced in governance and assessment of safety risks in accordance with GG 104.
·Experienced in governance and undertaking Walking, Cycling and Horse-Riding Assessments (WCHAR) in accordance with GG 142.
