Job description

The Role:
My client is currently seeking a Principal Engineer to join their Bridges and Civils team within their Transportation Practice, based in Cambridge. The successful candidates will support their team working on a number of exciting, high-profile multi-disciplinary projects and frameworks in the local teams and the wider UK, including major highways improvement schemes (e.g. Connect Plus Services/M25 DBFO), local authority schemes (e.g. Surrey County Council, Cambridgeshire PSC, Buckinghamshire CC PSC and more!) and the National Highways Eastern Region DSC.
 
Using your people, technical and delivery skills, you will be responsible for delivering a variety of civil and structural design packages and projects for new highway schemes, maintenance and assessment works. Your duties will include the management of both individual design packages and entire projects, supporting project resourcing and financial control to ensure schemes are delivered profitably, to programme and in accordance with company quality assurance systems.
 
You will have a background in civil engineering design and experience of delivery of single and multi-disciplinary projects within highway and local authority environments. You will ideally be familiar with working on projects at varying stages of development from feasibility to detailed design.
 
Qualifications:
·BEng / MEng or MSc degree in civil engineering or equivalent.
·Chartered status and membership of the ICE or IStructE.
 
Expected Criteria:
The role will be varied, requiring a balance of relevant industry experience, technical ability, communication and stakeholder management skills. Expected criteria are:
·Experience of working with key clients such as National Highways, Local Authorities and/or major Contractors.
·Ability to lead and support bids and tenders.
·Sufficient experience to undertake technical reviews of designs on larger projects.
·Detailed knowledge of relevant design standards (e.g. DMRB, TSRGD, MCHW, Eurocodes and those of National Highways and Manual for Streets).
·Ability to develop and agree scopes and manage the internal technical supply chain, including budgets, programme and quality of deliverables, delivering within set time.
·Excellent project management skills, commercial awareness, financial control and ability to deliver across a range of contract types. This will include an ability to manage stakeholders, e.g. specialist suppliers, independent checkers and local authorities.
·Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to converse with a wide range of Clients and colleagues across a number of engineering disciplines.
·Experience of work winning and developing Client relationships.
·Excellent spoken and written English.
