Mechanical Design Engineer - Nuclear SMR - Ideally Derby based but will consider Blackburn/Bristol areas
Permanent - £40,000 - £46,000 + Flexible working

This role could be for you!

Our client have a fantastic opportunity for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join our existing Project Development Team, based in the Derby area.

Main duties:

  • Using CAD to create technological plans and design high quality CAD product types by preparing general arrangement drawings, route layouts, assembly and detail illustrations.
  • Create, revise and update CAD illustrations, sketches, diagrams and design methods. Develop both 2D and 3D models, PFD's and P&ID's.
  • Develop working drawings from drawings or descriptions developed by Engineers.
  • Work closely with other Designers and Engineers to ensure a coordinated design.Coordinate and assist in team design reviews in order to evaluate design concepts and make suggestions.
  • Establish, Implement and maintain a CAD standard template and drawing archive.
  • Create prototypes for CAD prototypes and digital twin interface. 
  • Create alternative design solutions or quick engineering solutions for complex problems.
  • Preserve records of design process in accordance with sound design practices and ISO requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with required design safety issues, tolerances, and specifications.
  • Support other CAD/Design Engineers on design development activities.
  • Liaise directly with other SMR Island engineering functions on Turbine Island engineering design interfaces.
  • Maintain and update a catalog for the CAD design certification.


Skills/experience required:

  • Demonstrable experience in 2D & 3D CAD design and development within the nuclear, conventional power generation, oil & gas, or process engineering sectors or any other highly regulated industry.
  • Experience in developing and managing P&ID's and PFD'S
  • Good knowledge of engineering principles and the ability to create and read technical drawings, and to understand and interpret designs.
  • Good IT skills and experience using CAD software such as Auto-CAD, Revit and Solidworks, NX and Team centre collaboration. Ability to transfer, display and manipulate drawing information using Microsoft Office and other programmes.
  • General knowledge of health and safety requirements to design in line with industry standards.
  • Appreciation of GD&T.
  • Must be able to achieve BPSS
