Job Vacancy: Highways Operative
Location: Exeter
Contract Type: Initial 3 month contract
Rate: £10.50-£12.50 p/hour
 
Our client is currently seeking a Highways Operative to support the delivery of drainage and vegetation maintenance works across East and Mid Devon. This is a hands-on role requiring practical skills, teamwork, and a strong understanding of highways operations.
 
Key Responsibilities:
 
·Carry out cyclical highways maintenance tasks including drainage cleansing and vegetation control.
·Maintain highway drainage ditches and easements to a high standard.
·Use strimmer's and hedge cutters to clear vegetation and ensure access to work areas.
·Accurately locate underground services before mechanical excavation begins.
·Deploy Chapter 8 compliant road signage for safe working environments.
·Drive company vehicles (up to 3.5t), ensuring all safety checks are completed.
·Operate small plant and equipment efficiently and safely.
·Record work completed using a tablet or digital system.
·Work as part of a team following a scheduled annual maintenance programme.

Essential Requirements:
 
·Valid CSCS card
·12D T1/T2 Traffic Management qualification
·Category C / Class 2 (Cat C) driving licence
Desirable Skills:
 
·Experience with small plant and vegetation clearance
·Good awareness of health & safety standards
·Previous highways or drainage maintenance experience
