Job description

Requirement for an experienced Structures Section Engineer to join one of our top clients on a major highways project.

This is a fantastic freelance opportunity for a motivated engineer looking to take ownership of a defined section of works on a flagship infrastructure scheme.

The Role:

As a Structures Section Engineer, you'll manage and coordinate the technical delivery of a section of the project, ensuring works are completed safely, on time, and to the highest quality. You'll bridge the gap between Site Engineers and the Sub Agent, combining hands-on technical oversight with planning, coordination, and leadership responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities:

·Work Package Ownership: Take responsibility for delivering a defined section of structures works, from planning through to completion.
·Technical Oversight: Ensure works comply with design specifications, standards, and client requirements, providing guidance and technical support to Site Engineers.
·Setting Out & QA: Supervise setting out, checking, and quality documentation, ensuring robust record keeping and compliance with ITPs.
·Planning & Coordination: Assist in developing short-term programmes and lookaheads, coordinating resources, materials, and subcontractors.
·Health & Safety: Actively promote safe working practices, ensuring compliance with all Health & Safety procedures and method statements.
·Progress & Reporting: Monitor daily activities, report progress, and escalate issues where necessary to maintain programme and cost control.
·Team Leadership: Support and mentor Site Engineers, fostering collaboration and high standards across your section.

Who We're Looking For:
To succeed in this role, you'll need:

·Relevant Qualifications: HNC, degree level, or equivalent in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
·Proven Experience: Demonstrable background as a Section Engineer (or experienced Site Engineer ready for the step up), ideally within highways or major civil structures projects.
·Technical Knowledge: Strong setting out, QA, and construction methodology knowledge with an ability to resolve technical queries.
·Leadership Skills: Experience coordinating small teams and managing subcontractors to achieve programme and quality targets.
·Industry Familiarity: Understanding of management systems, processes, and standards used across highways and infrastructure works.
