Job description

Description
My client is seeking an experienced transport planner with feasibility design experience for their London-based team. The team undertakes a portfolio of high-profile studies that focus on urban streets within a particular area or corridor, and aim to develop solutions that enable healthier and more efficient movement whilst also recognising the role of streets as places. This work is typically undertaken for clients such as Transport for London or London boroughs, and recent projects include the Deansgate and Salford in Manchester. This opportunity offers the right candidate the opportunity to grow their career, where you will draw on your previous experience and passion for improving streets to manage these complex projects.
These projects draw on diverse skills that include highway engineering, traffic modelling (both local and strategic), business case development, public consultation and GIS analysis. Whilst you may not necessarily have had extensive hands-on experience in all of these fields, you will be able to draw on your experience to take a holistic perspective in order to select and apply the most appropriate set of tools and techniques for each commission. As such, it is likely that your background includes a balance of technical experience (for example in engineering and/or modelling) and a strong grasp of the societal, economic and political contexts that transport exists in, together with a successful track record of managing projects.
As a Principal Consultant you will take a project management role in project teams comprised of both junior and more senior experts. You will work closely with market-leading Associates and Directors across their offices, who will actively support you in project delivery and in your wider career development.
Requirements
You will work as part of a team providing solutions to both private and public sector clients:
·Manage transport planning studies, drawing on your project management skills, technical knowledge and analytical ability to effectively manage multi-disciplinary teams that comprise both internal colleagues and external subconsultants
·Prepare proposals for work winning.
·Apply your holistic perspective to integrate work developed by team members (including technical work such as traffic modelling outputs or design drawings) into high-quality project deliverables that contribute to the company's reputation for delivering excellence
·Effectively liaise with clients and other external stakeholders (including politicians and the public)
·Prepare reports and deliver presentations that are appropriately tailored to varying audiences
·Manage project budgets, exercising effective financial and budgetary control
·Manage the preparation of competitive proposals for transport planning studies
·Have a broad background that balances technical knowledge (which may be through hands-on experience in engineering and/or modelling) with a strong grasp of the societal, economic and political contexts that transport exists in (including policies such as the Mayor's Transport Strategy and Healthy Streets)
·Manage multi-disciplinary teams in an intelligent manner, which may include highway engineers, traffic modellers, business case specialists, consultation specialists, GIS analysts and urban designers
·Effectively deploy an appropriate mix of analytical tools and techniques for each project, drawing on your understanding of their strengths and weaknesses, and available transport data sources
·Apply your excellent written and verbal communication skills, including your ability to appropriately tailor a message to non-technical audiences (such as the public and politicians)
·Take responsibility for multiple projects simultaneously, successfully managing competing deadlines
·Hold professional and academic qualifications in transport planning, engineering or an allied field
·Have a solid ability to use Microsoft Office (in particular Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
·Understand the capabilities of specialist software such as traffic modelling packages (including LinSig, VISSIM and SATURN), CAD, GIS and data visualisation packages (such as Tableau); hands-on experience would be an advantage but is not essential
