Are you a senior rail engineer with experience delivering complex, systems-led projects from design through to commissioning and handover?

Salary: £73,946.40 to £92,433 DOE (£61,622 - £77,028 + 20% Flexible Cash Fund)
Location: Birmingham, 3 days in office per week, remainder from home.

An opportunity has arisen for a Lead Project Engineer to support the delivery of a major, greenfield rolling stock maintenance depot in Birmingham. This is a long-term role offering continuity across the full project lifecycle, from early design through construction, testing, commissioning and final handover.
Reporting to the Head of Engineering for Depots, you will act as the single point of technical accountability between the client organisation and the design and build joint venture. The role carries responsibility for systems integration, engineering assurance and delivery of a complex depot and integrated operational control environment.
You will play a key role in ensuring designs are deliverable, interfaces are managed effectively, and the finished asset is capable of being safely brought into operational service.
Essential experience:
- Strong rail engineering background with experience on rolling stock maintenance depots or equivalent complex rail facilities
- Proven experience delivering projects across both design and construction phases, including testing and commissioning
- Solid understanding of systems engineering, control centres and operational requirements
- Broad technical appreciation across multiple systems, including:Experience working within a Design & Build and NEC contract framework
- Control and command / operational control centre environments
- Signalling and depot protection systems
- SCADA and building management systems
- OCS, HV power, M&E and communications
- Ability to manage interfaces, integration risks and multidisciplinary teams
- Confident operating in a client-facing role, holding suppliers to account
Desirable experience
- Experience delivering passenger rolling stock depots
- Background with train manufacturers or depot delivery specialists
- Experience on major stations or similarly systems-heavy rail infrastructure
- Previous line management or senior technical leadership experience
