Job description

Highway Inspector
 
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced highway inspector to come and join our busy client in the East Midlands on a temporary contract basis.
 
The highway inspector's role is to provide a proactive and reactive highway inspection service, to ensure it is safe, free from hazards and fit for purpose, in accordance with our duty of care to all highway users in line with the current code of practice.
 
In this role you will:
 
1.Carry out a citywide planned programme of safety inspections of all highway assets, keeping accurate records to identify defects which require action and process works orders for repair within prescribed timescales, in accordance with Section 58 of the Highways Act 1980
2.Carry out citywide inspections on utility apparatus, plant and operations, in accordance with Section 73/74/81 of the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991, promoting safe and quality workmanship within prescribed timescales
3.Assess, investigate and respond to a wide range of customer enquiries and complaints, keeping accurate records to process works orders for repair and improvements where necessary, to reach a satisfactory conclusion for all parties, in line with the current Code of Practice for Well Maintained Highways
4.Compile data and information in relation to third party claims, which have occurred on the highway and respond to insurance company requests, ensuring that the council can maintain a sound defence and where necessary, attend court to defend our actions
5.Work with local Neighbourhood Teams, Community Groups, Members and other Council Teams to plan improvements which promote good asset management and enhance the street scene
6.Approve requests for domestic and commercial vehicular access applications, including site assessment and calcuations to provide quotes to customers, in accordance with Section 184 of the Highways Act 1980
7.Provide consent to the licensing of skips, scaffolds and hoardings on the public highway, ensuring that the erection of apparatus is safe and not causing a hazard to other road users, in accordance with Section 139, 169 and 172 of the Highways Act 1980
8.Contribute and assist in the development of annual work programmes for highway maintenance, based on the inspector's knowledge of the highway network and for the need of repair / early intervention, providing recommendations for treatments
