Ryan started his career in 2015 just a few years after the company was founded. Being one of the early members, he has watched the business develop and grow to become the company it is today. Ryan has been nationally recognised for his work in the industry and works every day to his ethos of making a difference to those he works with.
What brought you to Carrington West originally?
A mixture of change and inquisitiveness. I was in a working environment where I felt as though I was giving a lot but not getting much in return. I was referred to Carrington West and knew it was a chance to reach my potential, and a company that would give as much as I gave, which has proven to be very true.
Describe your career journey in the past 10 years.
I’ve grown a lot in the past 10 years and have been able to look after myself financially. I've learned a lot, which is something Carrington West is passionate about. There have been setbacks on the way like there is in any job, but I can look back on the last 10 years with pride.
What does the culture here mean to you?
It’s really important. I've been here since the early years and I've been able to see the culture develop and become what it is today, which is an absolute cornerstone of what we do. It's evolved a lot in the past 10 years, but we've really developed the culture as the company has grown. The company has maintained that small company feel, which can be difficult with such a large amount of people.
How have you benefited from the learning and development?
I’ve really benefited from the learning and development here; being given the opportunity to learn things I wouldn’t have elsewhere. It’s taught me a number of things about being in a people faced role and about being someone who can serve with personality and my own direction on how to do things.
The L&D platform is brilliant and it's always there to dip your toes into if you want a refresh. I’m also part of the leadership development programme (LDP), the speakers are world class and it’s something I really cherish being part of.
What are some of the challenges you have faced working in recruitment?
Having to be resilient on a daily basis can sometimes be a challenge. Everyone has their days when you don't feel like you can be that resilient person. Knowing that you've got a good team around you, and people that will pick you up when you’re down, is important.
Which moments are you the proudest of?
Hitting 10 years is a big milestone for me, I’m one of only a few people in the company who have hit that milestone, so it means a lot. I also won highly commended for the best temporary consultant at the Global Recruiter Awards in 2021, as well as shortlisted at several other awards. It’s amazing to have that national recognition!

What helps you perform at your best each day?
I believe that it all starts with you, bringing my best self to work is important. It’s really good to have a team around me that’s there to offer support and words of advice. I’m always surrounded by world class recruiters which definitely helps me perform at my best.
How do you measure success?
A lot of recruiters base success on their earnings. For me, it’s knowing that I’m truly making a difference and living to my own and Carrington West’s values. I judge success on whether I’ve given a candidate a good feeling about their next opportunity, and if clients have given positive feedback. If earning is important to you, then money will come as a result of having that attitude. Success to me is making sure I can end each day knowing that I've done a good job.
What advice would you give to someone starting a career in recruitment?
Be ready to work hard, know that perseverance is key, and don’t be afraid to pick up the phone!
There will likely be hard moments but persevere because it will all pay off.
What’s next?
Probably another 10 years of this I imagine! I recently switched teams which has allowed me to keep things fresh. I'm excited to carry on with this journey and see where it takes me.
