Chloe joined us in 2024 as an Associate Consultant straight from university. Choosing a career in recruitment to suit her extroverted nature, Chloe has navigated learning the nuclear market and building relationships. Since joining, Chloe has truly lived our values, dedicating herself to her work, innovating new ideas, attending multiple industry events and being promoted within her first 10 months.
What initially attracted you to Carrington West?
I first saw Carrington West on social media and thought the culture looked amazing! I was finishing university at the time and saw a few adverts on Indeed and decided to apply.
What was your first impression of the company when you joined?
It felt like a shock coming from a hospitality background. Everyone in the company was happy to help and answer any questions I had, it was just really friendly.
How have you progressed since you joined the business?
Within my first 10 months at Carrington West, I passed my probation and was promoted to Recruitment Consultant which I was really proud of. I have attended multiple industry events and I’m looking forward to going to more in the future. My confidence has increased massively since joining as I’ve built meaningful relationships with clients and candidates and gained a deeper understanding of my market.
How was navigating a new career straight from university?
Joining as a graduate I had no idea if I’d be ‘good’ at recruitment. I’m a social and extroverted person, so I knew that I wanted a career where I could be around people but wasn’t sure how this would transfer to being on the phones. It was also a switch up going from university life and doing coursework. But it was a refreshing change, and I love the structure of an office job, it’s helped me to have a set routine.
Tell me about a key skill you’ve developed since starting the role.
The main skill I’ve developed is building and maintaining relationships. Working in hospitality previously, the relationship building is quite different. I’ve loved building relationships and have embraced being myself with clients and candidates. It’s allowed me to be really authentic and just let my personality shine through in all my interactions.
How have you found our learning and development programme?
I have found our learning and development programme so good! As someone with dyslexia, learning has been quite difficult in the past. However, that’s not the case here. The learning groups are smaller, and I can ask as many questions as I need until I understand the topic fully.
Our Executive Coach and Development Specialist, Kirsty, has been really great in particular. She’s trialled different styles of training, allowed me to go at my own pace and I can always book in more sessions which is amazing.
What are some of the challenges you have faced working in recruitment?
As I mentioned, having dyslexia does give me some limitations. There’s a lot of reading involved with CVs and identifying job specifications. To overcome it I make sure that I double check things and take the time to fully interpret what’s being said so I can deliver the best service possible to clients and candidates. A lot of the learning has been vocalised which has really helped, and adjustments have been made to help me work best.
What are you most proud of in your career so far at Carrington West?
I’d probably say that I’m most proud of the relationships that I have with my clients. If you told me 18 months ago that I would have built these relationships, I’d be so shocked! I’m also proud of myself for stepping out of my comfort zone and attending industry events and of course being promoted.
What advice would you give to someone considering a career in recruitment?
A career in recruitment can be very demanding; the reward is amazing and building relationships is really important. I’d give the advice to make sure that you prioritise self-care and take time to yourself in the evenings and effectively manage your work-life balance.
What are your plans for the future?
Looking to the future, I want to build better relationships with clients and candidates. I’d love to attend more industry events and visit more clients now that I can drive! There’s a lot of upcoming projects in the nuclear sector so it would be amazing to work on those and to keep building my industry knowledge. I’d also like to keep building my plan and being promoted to Senior Consultant would be amazing too.
