Job description
Project Controls Engineer
Nottingham
Build smarter programmes that change how the UK moves
You want more than a Gantt chart. In this Project Controls Engineer role you'll shape how multi-disciplinary programmes are planned, governed and delivered-giving project managers and senior leaders the live, reliable data they need to make the right calls, first time.
Why you'll love this
From day one you'll be trusted to design and run the controls that keep complex portfolios on track. You'll influence planning, risk, reporting and close-out across programmes, and you'll coach others to raise the bar-so your impact is felt well beyond a single project.
Who you'll be joining
You'll be part of a collaborative Project Delivery function working closely with pre-construction, commercial, finance and operations, as well as designers, specialists and supply chain partners. The environment is data-driven, open and supportive, with clear quality standards and performance indicators that enable continuous improvement.
What you'll be doing
·You will manage and maintain programme schedules and plans, working with project managers and multi-disciplinary teams.
·You will proactively identify, assess and mitigate risks at programme level, supporting adherence to change and risk processes at project level.
·You will coordinate pre-commissioning activities with internal and external stakeholders.
·You will develop and maintain reports that meet client requirements and internal needs, providing reliable live data for decision-making.
·You will analyse schedules to surface risks, opportunities, benefits, trends and issues, helping optimise resources and business resilience.
·You will support quality standards and KPI adherence across programmes.
·You will drive project close-out, lessons learned and benefits management at programme level.
·You will champion PMO processes and controls, promoting knowledge sharing across the organisation.
·You will oversee day-to-day performance and development of junior team members (e.g., a Project Controls Assistant).
What you'll bring
·HNC/HND/Degree in Project Management or similar; strong alternatives (e.g., Engineering with proven project controls experience) considered. Membership of APM or similar is a plus.
·Proven experience building and maintaining schedules across multiple projects/programmes; highways or construction exposure is advantageous, not essential.
·Highly organised, analytical, with meticulous attention to detail; able to influence and collaborate at all levels and manage competing demands.
·Confident challenging assumptions to drive continuous improvement. Advanced MS Office (Excel/Project); Primavera P6 or similar desirable.
What's on offer
A £38,000 - £48,000 per year salary, meaningful responsibility from day one, mentoring opportunities, and the chance to embed best-practice controls across high-profile programmes. You'll see the direct impact of your work in safer, better-planned delivery and clearer reporting that leaders rely on. (Project Controls Engineer expertise is recognised and valued here.)
Where and how you'll work
UK-based with flexibility and collaborative working across project, client and office locations (with occasional travel as programmes require). Clear pathways for progression into senior programme controls and PMO leadership, with support for professional development and accreditation. (Ideal next step if you're a Project Controls Engineer ready to widen your influence.)
