Bridge Engineer - Asset Management
 
My client is working on an integrated contract delivering a range of capital major projects, capital maintenance programmes and asset management activities in partnership with their client.
 
They maintain over 1000 structures, many of them with historic interest and key significance in the transport network, providing a varied and challenging workload. There has been an increase on capital spend on highway structures, resulting in an increased workload for the team. The team's workload includes principal inspections; structural assessments; feasibility studies and investigations; design and delivery of strengthening, repair and replacement.
 
The Bridges Team have a requirement for a Bridge Engineer - Asset Management to join their team for an initial period of 12 months .
A key part of the role will be to engage with the use of the new Bridge Asset Management System (Bridgestation) to ensure that it is being used to its full potential to schedule and record inspections (allowing for risk-based intervals), schedule defects, and derive maintenance activities.
In addition, the role will involve the management of two portfolios of work consisting of assessments to confirm the safe load capacity of structures, and an exercise to improve the asset inventory data in the Bridge Management System.
 
The Role
·Review and manage the use of Bridgestation to ensure its full potential can be realised;
·Review Principal Inspection Report maintenance recommendations to build a future capital and revenue work bank (in co-ordination with financial plans derived by others);
·Derive a strategy and plan to address the current asset inventory data gap for highway load carrying assets, and oversee implementation of plan following approval from client;
·Assist with the introduction of Risk Based Principal Inspection Intervals into the new Bridge Management System;
·Manage discrete packages of structural assessments completed by others that have been derived and prioritised from a package of structural reviews.
 
The Ideal Candidate
·Understanding of typical Highway Bridge Structural forms, typical Capital and Revenue maintenance requirements, and an understanding and appreciation of Whole Life Costing;
·Working knowledge of The Inspection Manual for Highways Structures and CS450 Inspection of Highway Structures;
·Degree in Civil Engineering, or similar Engineering field;
·Graduate Member (GMICE) (and working towards Incorporated/Chartered Membership) of The Institution of Civil Engineers;
·Computer literate particularly with packages such as Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint;
·Experience of working with clients and consultants in the field of bridge inspection, assessment and maintenance activities;
·Capable of working within time and cost constraints and managing a small portfolio of work.
·Previous experience of reviewing Principal Inspection Reports and creating a maintenance work bank for structures projects is desirable.
·Experience of using Bridgestation for Asset Management related activities is desirable.
·Experience of working with large data sets, and associated tools for managing data (eg Databases, Power BI);
·Understanding of Risk Based Principal Inspection Intervals is desirable
