We are delighted to invite you to our free, upcoming event “Building Better Teams: Attract, Hire & Retain Talent Through Company Culture”.

The morning session, being held conveniently near Waterloo and London Bridge stations, is being hosted by Carrington West and features guest speakers Paul Devoy, CEO of Investors in People, and David Smith, one of the UK’s leading workplace culture experts and HR professionals, ex People Director of Asda and author.

We will provide valuable insights derived from candidates' journeys to help you build better teams. We'll delve into the questions they ask, the feedback they offer post-interview, and the rationale behind their selection of one company over another. Our esteemed keynote speakers will enlighten us on employees' expectations and the pivotal role culture plays in effective people management. We’ll share how to build this culture, so your team performs to the best of its potential.

You will have the opportunity to network with fellow hiring managers during the break period, and opportunities to pose questions to the speakers.

Directions: The Buffini Chao Deck is located on level three of the National Theatre building. There are four lifts which can be taken to this level or there is the main staircase. More information on transport links and parking can be found here.

Speaker Biographies

Paul Devoy, CEO Investors in People

Paul is the Chief Executive of Investors in People (IIP). In 2016, Paul led the buyout of IIP from the UK Government and the organisation is now a Community Interest Company. IIP's purpose is to Make Work Better. Investors in People works with a community of organisations, employing over 1 million people providing digital diagnostic tools, advice, support and assessment against their internationally recognised Frameworks. Our network of 150 skilled and experienced Consultants work with organisations across 70 countries, but predominantly in the UK.

Prior to leading Investors in People, Paul was a Director at the UK Commission for Employment and Skills, an executive non-departmental body that offers guidance on skills and employment issues in the UK. He led the development and implementation of strategic programmes to create sustainable skills solutions with joint investment from industry and government.

He previously worked in the Scottish Prison Service for 4 years leading on change management programmes. He spent his early career working in local DWP offices. Paul studied Human Resource Management, graduating in 1994. He is a Chartered Fellow of Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and a Companion of the Chartered Management Institute.

David Smith, HR Expert & Author of “Asda Magic: The 7 Principles of Building a High Performance Culture”

HR expert David Smith has played a pivotal role in the human resources of Asda for many years. Devoting the majority of his career to HR, David has developed a wide range of skills from performance management and cultural change to restructuring and growing business. Now an internationally sought public speaker, David has spoken for the likes of Barclaycard, the NHS and Red Bull helping leaders to navigate times of major change.

Best known for his time working with Asda, David Smith was formerly the People and IT Director and Executive Board Director for Asda. With Asda, David was responsible for various strategies involving loss prevention and workplace culture for the people of Asda. He is widely remembered for huge turnaround at the retailer, taking the company to the number one Best Place to Work in The Sunday Times Survey, a feat that no other large company had either performed before or been able to since. Outside of Asda, David is also known as the former Chairman of the Institute for Employment Studies.

Before joining Asda, David studied at Henley Management College achieving an MBA in Business and at the Sheffield Hallam University achieving a BA in Business. David first entered the working world as part of the coal industry, where events such as the mining strikes and restructuring of the industry allowed him to begin to build his knowledge of business relations and HR. From 1994, David joined Asda and worked his way through the ranks, having a significant impact on the business that we see today. David helped to develop schemes such as the All Colleague Bonus Scheme, IVF Leave, basic skills programmes and Grandparents Leave.

Currently, David is dedicating his time to public speaking and authoring his own books. David is the author of Asda Magic- The 7 Principles of Building a High-Performance Culture, Culture Trumps Strategy- Achieving High Performance Through People and Performance Management for the 21st Century. He also provides mentoring and workshops for corporate clients in the art of employee engagement, reasons for change and business turnaround. As a public speaker, David is sought to speak on customer service, leadership in tough times, powerful business communication and effective change.
