Matt's Story

Matt joined Carrington West in 2014 as a Senior Consultant in the highways team. He started his career is sales before moving into recruitment and after over six years with Carrington West, is one of the company's most successful recruiters.

What motivates you to get up in the morning?

My new born baby mainly! Seriously though, it’s the people I come to work with, I feel as though I am surrounded by friends and it’s a great feeling coming to spend time with them everyday. We work well as a team, motivate each other and are comfortable enough to give each other constructive criticism where necessary. It’s a joy watching everybody around me become successful whilst I continue to improve myself.

What is your favourite thing about working for Carrington West?

The culture, there is an intelligent progressive crowd here with some amazing personalities. We are one big team with everybody ready to chip in and help one another, even people on different teams. We work hard together but also have some amazing fun on our company trips and nights out.

What has been the highlight of your time at Carrington West?

Having my record quarter in spring 2019, a company record that stands to this date. I had a tough time in 2018 but with some hard work and focus I really surprised myself with what I could achieve.

What has been your biggest challenge at work so far?

Since working here my biggest challenge was when IR35 legislation was changed in the public sector. It meant weeks of talking to disgruntled contractors, all of my clients ceasing to recruit for months and losing some of my longest standing contractors. The benefit on the other side of all this however was I now have a good understanding of legislation, I can speak about it like an expert and I was far more prepared when it was announced for the private sector.

What would your advice be to anyone starting their career at Carrington West?

Initially you will be surrounded by some very successful consultants who have established desks and are billing amounts you might think aren’t achievable yourself. Don’t worry, everybody has that perception, it’s just part of starting the job. My advice is to work hard stay focused and learn off those around you. It doesn’t just come overnight but I cannot stress enough, if you persevere, how well you are rewarded for the work you put in here.

Tell us one thing about yourself your colleagues don’t know!

I have a secret Sudoku addiction completing at least five puzzles per day. I am also in the top 1% of players worldwide (according to my app) I like to tell myself I do it to keep my brain sharp… but in reality I think it’s just an addiction and probably an issue I should talk to someone about.
