What does a HV project manager do?
HV, or high voltage, project managers plan and deliver electrical infrastructure projects on the high voltage network, typically anything above 1kV up to the 400kV transmission network, including substations, overhead lines, underground cabling and new connections for homes, businesses and, increasingly, renewable generation and battery storage schemes. They manage contractors and internal engineering teams to deliver projects safely, on programme and within budget, while coordinating closely with distribution network operators or National Grid on connection agreements and outage planning.
Day to day, this covers managing design and consenting, procuring and supervising contractors, agreeing connection and outage dates with network operators, tracking programme and cost, ensuring compliance with the Electricity at Work Regulations and relevant engineering recommendations, and managing health and safety and CDM responsibilities on live and often energised sites. With demand for grid connections rising sharply as solar, wind, battery storage and EV charging infrastructure are rolled out, HV project managers are increasingly sought after by both established network operators and the renewable developers connecting into their networks.
It's a role that suits people with a strong electrical engineering grounding who have moved into, or are looking to move into, project delivery and stakeholder management rather than pure design.
How much does a HV Project Manager typically earn?

On a contract basis, day rates typically run £600 to £750, reflecting current live demand for high voltage infrastructure delivery.
Broadly, HV engineers earn in the region of £40,000 to £55,000 per year, or around £400 to £550 a day on contract. HV project managers earn in the region of £55,000 to £85,000 per year, commonly around £70,000 to £75,000, or £600 to £750 a day on contract. Senior HV project managers earn in the region of £75,000 to £95,000 per year, or around £700 to £850 a day on contract. Programme managers and heads of delivery earn £90,000 or more per year, or £800 or more per day on contract - but this can depend on IR35 status.
